10 Best Things to Do in Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal, with over 100 kilometers of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Only a three-hour drive south from Lisbon, this region is a must-visit for any Portugal itinerary.

The Algarve is famous for its warm climate, beautiful beaches, seafood, surfing and more. Some of the best things to do in the Algarve include visiting an incredible sea cave called Benagil, walking out to the most southwestern point in all of Europe, and shopping for traditional Portuguese ceramics.

1. Visit Benagil Sea Cave

source: pinatravels.org

Benagil Cave, or Algar de Benagil (its Portuguese name) is a large sea cave near Carvoeiro. Visiting Benagil Cave is one of the best things to do in the Algarve because it’s the most unique and magical cave on the coast.

Benagil Cave is unique because of a big hole in its ceiling, which is known as the eye of the cave. Although Benagil is a sea cave, it does have a small outcrop of sand inside it, making it possible to stand below the eye of the cave.

The cave is just around the corner from Benagil Beach, but the only way to visit inside Benagil Cave is to go by boat. On Benagil Beach you can rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board to paddle into the cave self-guided. However, I recommend going by tour.

The best tours are kayak tours, which bring you all along the coast and then inside the cave, or motorboat tours. Note that it is only with kayak tours that you are able to land on the sandy outcrop inside the cave.

2. Go on a Boat Trip to Ria Formosa Natural Park

10 Best Things to Do in Algarve, Portugal

Ria Formosa Natural Park is another one of the top things to do in the Algarve. This natural park is a lagoon that was created by a system of barrier islands which connect to the sea through six inlets.

The best way to visit Ria Formosa Natural Park is by boat tour. Most tours depart from Faro. On a tour, you can see the Santa Maria Lighthouse on the little island of Farol. You’ll also get to see lots of unique flora, fauna, and wildlife, including chameleons!

Most tours include a stop on the island Deserta, where you can admire the rolling dunes and unique landscapes.

Ria Formosa Natural Park also has plenty of swimming spots. If you’d like to swim, pick a tour that brings you to Farol and Deserta – both have quiet beaches.

3. Hike Part of the Rota Vicentina

is an extensive network of hiking trails that stretches over 750 kilometers across Portugal. This hiking route brings hikers through villages, past limestone formations, along coastal cliffs, and alongside serene sea coves.

The Fisherman’s Trail is one of the routes of the Rota Vicentina, and it has several segments that run along the Algarve coast. Walking part of the Fishermen’s Trail is one of the best things to do in Algarve, particularly if you like to hike.

The official Fisherman’s Trail covers 226.5 kilometers, beginning in Sines on the Alentejo coast and ending in Lagos. Completing the full trail typically takes several days for most hikers – but don’t worry, you can absolutely stick to walking part of the trail as just a day trip.

A popular day trip option for hiking the Fishermen’s Trail is to explore the stretch from Praia da Ingrina to Praia dos Rebolinhos, a beautiful beach just outside Sagres. This route is about 6 kilometers and takes around 2 hours to complete.

Throughout the walk, you’ll be treated to views of the coast and of the sea. You’ll also get to stop at gorgeous beaches, like .

4. Visit the Most Southwestern Point of Mainland Europe

things to do in algarve, things to do in algarve Portugal, things to do in the algarve

Located just a few kilometers northwest of Sagres, the historic (Cape of Saint Vincent) extends dramatically into the Atlantic Ocean. This cape is famously the most southwestern point of mainland Europe.

In past centuries, particularly during the 14th century and earlier, many Europeans viewed Cabo de São Vicente as the edge of the world. In those days, people couldn’t conceptualize what might be out beyond the cape.

Today, you can visit Cabo de São Vicente to take in beautiful views of the Algarve coast. And, of course, to be able to say, you’ve stood at the most southwestern point of Europe!

While there, you can visit the remnants of an old monastery, which was partially destroyed in the 1755 earthquake that struck Portugal. The cape is also home to an operational lighthouse that is perched on the cliffs.

The lighthouse complex includes a small museum that gives you insight into the region’s maritime history and a gift shop offering local souvenirs.

5. Take in Coastal Views at Ponta da Piedade

10 Best Things to Do in Algarve, Portugal

Ponta da Piedade is a cluster of rock formations that rise up to 20 meters above the Atlantic Ocean on the coast of the Algarve. The rock formations create natural arches, caves, and towers that make for beautiful coastal views.

This spot is an absolute must-see while visiting the Algarve, and it’s especially gorgeous at sunset. Ponta da Piedade is a 15-minute drive from Lagos, and there is free parking. Alternatively, you can walk from Lagos, which takes about 40 minutes.

When you visit Ponta da Piedade you can walk along the top of the cliffs and rock formations, following well-worn paths. There aren’t any protective fences, so be very careful of slipping! From the top, you have incredible views of the rock formations, grottos, and ocean. On a clear day, you can see as far west as Sagres.

There is also a set of around 200 stairs that take you down to the water for a different perspective. From the platform at the bottom, you can see further into the grottos, and see the power of the ocean waves.

There are usually local fishing boats at the bottom, and for a fee you can hop on for a tour of the area’s caves, arches, and grottoes close up. From Ponta da Piedade there is also a relatively new boardwalk that takes you all the way to Canavial beach. It’s a lovely walk to take, especially at sunset.

6. Visit a Medieval Castle in Silves

10 Best Things to Do in Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve is known for its coastal towns and beaches. However, there are inland towns in the region that are well-worth visiting – particularly Silves.

Silves is a historic Algarve town known for its medieval castle, old city gate, beautiful cathedral, and quaint, winding streets.

From the 8th to 13th century, the Algarve was under Moorish rule. During this era, Silves was a major trading center. The Moors used the Silves Castle (which you can visit!) to defend the region.

In 1242, the Moors were overthrown by the Portuguese. The great Mosque of Silves was transformed into the Silves cathedral. After this, the significance of the town started to decline. It’s since become the quiet, beautiful town you can visit today.

Silves Castle is in the center of Silves, perched on a hill that overlooks the town. It’s one of the best-preserved castles in the region. There, you can see beautiful medieval ruins, learn about Moorish history, and take in amazing panoramic views of Silves and the surrounding region.

You can go down a flight of steps into what was once the castle’s water cistern. This was an underground water catchment that was fed by rain. You can see the (empty) cistern, which is now home to a small exhibition on wildlife and ecology in the region around Silves.

Aside from the castle, you’ll want to spend at least a half-day wandering around Silves. Pop into the Archaeological Museum of Silves (Museu Municipal de Arqueologia de Silves), visit the Silves Cathedral, and walk through the Old City Gate.

7. Sunbathe and Swim at Camilo Beach

Camilo Beach is a small beach on the Atlantic Ocean. As is characteristic for most Algarve beaches, Camilo Beach is surrounded by rugged limestone cliffs.

Camilo beach is only a 30 minute walk from Lagos towards Ponta da Piedade. If you’ve got a vehicle, you can park at the top of the stairs. There is a large parking lot with free parking.

To get to the actual beach, you’ll walk 200 steps down a wooden staircase that descends from the top of the cliffs to the sand. On the east end of the beach there is a tunnel through the cliffs that takes you to a smaller beach that is next to Camilo.

Regardless of the time of year, you’ll want to visit Praia do Camilo. In the summer, it’s the perfect spot for picturesque sunbathing and swimming, and during the cooler months, head there for a beautiful sunset or beach walk.

8. Wander the Beautiful Streets of Lagos

10 Best Things to Do in Algarve, Portugal

Visiting Lagos is a must-do while in the Algarve because of its charming mix of history, culture, and natural beauty. This coastal town is known for its cobbled streets, historic architecture, and beaches. It’s a great town to base yourself out of while visiting the Algarve, or, you can day trip to it.

While walking around Lagos, you can wander the historic city center with its ancient city walls, colorful buildings, and cute squares. Don’t miss landmarks like the Church of Santa Maria and the Governor’s Castle. If you prefer riding a bike, you can book Algarve bike tour here.

The closest beach to the town is Praia Dona Ana, which is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters. You can relax on the beach, swim in the sea, or explore the nearby rock formations and caves.

For a delicious meal, head to Restaurante O Camilo, located near Praia do Camilo. This restaurant offers fresh seafood dishes, traditional Portuguese cuisine, and stunning views of the ocean, making it a perfect spot to enjoy dinner after a day of sightseeing and beach activities in Lagos.

9. Go Surfing on

One of the coolest things to do in the Algarve is to go surfing! One of the best places for beginner surfing is on Tonel Beach, also known as .

This beach is on the western side of Ponta de Sagres at Portugal’s southwestern tip. Its distinctive location makes it a prime spot for surfers of all abilities, particularly during the colder months when the waves are larger.

Even if you’re not into surfing, Tonel Beach is a stunning place to visit. The beach is surrounded by towering, steep cliffs that provide natural wind protection. There are trails leading to the top of the cliffs, offering panoramic views of the beach and the Atlantic Ocean.

During the summer, swimming is possible at Tonel Beach, but it is recommended only for strong swimmers due to the powerful currents and waves. Stay safe!

Several surf schools based in Sagres operate at , typically bringing daily groups. These surf schools offer all the necessary equipment and provide beginner lessons.

Did You Get Travel Insurance Yet?

The Insurance companies I recommend are Hey Mondo and Safety Wing

Hey Mondo is great if you are looking for a great value flexible policy. They offer single-trip cover, annual multi-trip cover, and long-term travel cover. Safety Wing is great value, with monthly coverage starting at $45.08. It’s super easy to use, and it just renews each month. I currently use them as they offer me free cover for my son as part of my policy.

Read my full travel insurance post here, where I go into detail about all companies.

10. Shop for Portuguese Ceramics

Portugal is known for its ceramics. You’ll see glazed blue ceramic tiles or azulejos everywhere! Azulejos date as far back as the 13th century, when the Moors took over what is now Spain and Portugal.

The word azulejo comes from Arabic roots, translating to a “small polished stone”. Originally they were simple pieces cut into geometric shapes in neutral tones, but they became more ornate over time.

You’ll notice beautiful azulejos and pottery all over Portugal, including in the Algarve. Many shops throughout the region sell ceramics that are hand-painted, which means you can find something very unique to bring home or gift to a friend or family member.

A great spot for ceramics shopping is Ceramica Paraiso in Raposeira, which has been around since 1976. You’ll find lots of original and beautiful ceramics there!
