Discovering Cyprus: 15 Best Places in Cyprus to Visit

There are many beautiful places in Cyprus to visit, whether it’s your first or fifth trip. Cyprus is an island in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea famous for its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and stunning beaches. I’m lucky to call this island my second home and have spent years exploring the top places to go in Cyprus.

With so many destinations, deciding where to visit in Cyprus can be overwhelming. In this Cyprus Places to Visit guide, I’m highlighting the best places to visit in Cyprus, from the island’s most beautiful beaches to famous landmarks.

Discovering Cyprus: The Ultimate Guide to the Best Places to Visit

Cyprus Best Places to Visit

1. Archaeological Site of Nea Paphos

Discovering Cyprus: The Ultimate Guide to the Best Places to Visit

Where’s the best place to go in Cyprus? The archaeological site of Nea Paphos is a top contender. These 4th-century ruins are some of Cyprus’s most important areas of interest and a must-see for history lovers. Nea Paphos boasts spectacular, well-preserved mosaics and four large Roman villas.

It’s ideally located toward the end of the main beach in the center of Pathos. I recommend grabbing an early breakfast at one of the many seafront restaurants and taking a stroll. I say early, as you don’t want to visit the ruins during the mid-day heat! The complex has little shade, so apply sunscreen and bring plenty of water.

There’s a good amount of walking between the archaeological site’s different areas.

2.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site lies just outside of Paphos and is one of the best places to go in Cyprus. The vast tombs were used for aristocracy rather than kings, but their extravagant size is incredible, considering they’re carved underground from solid stone.

3. Aphrodite’s Rock

Discovering Cyprus: The Ultimate Guide to the Best Places to Visit

Mythology states that this is the birthplace of Aphrodite, making this sea stack the best place to visit in Cyprus to taste ancient life. It’s also a popular tourist destination for swimming and snorkeling, as it’s easy to reach from the road between Paphos and Limassol. To beat the crowds, visit early in the morning before the tourist coaches arrive!

4.

One of my favorite places in Cyprus is Cape Greco, located in southeast Cyprus. This nature reserve has incredible sea caves and clear turquoise waters. In addition to being the European Union’s easternmost point, it’s a famous local sunset spot. The Bridge of Love, a natural rock formation, is a popular place for couples to watch the sunset.

5

WaterWorld Waterpark in Ayia Napa ranks among the best places to visit in Cyprus with children. Visit WaterWorld for a family day of rides, slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and more. There are many tasty food and drink options, so you can easily spend an entire day at this waterpark.

6. Paphos

Discovering Cyprus: The Ultimate Guide to the Best Places to Visit

A roundup of the best places in Cyprus to visit would be incomplete without Paphos. Paphos is a charming harbor city with a picturesque old town, tasty Cypriot cuisine, and many nearby beaches. Despite being the smallest city in Cyprus, Paphos is a popular vacation spot for tourists.

7. Limassol

Limassol has many things to do, making it the best place to go in Cyprus for plenty of variety. Families will love staying here for the picturesque beaches and city activities. I spent a lot of time in Limassol while based in Cyprus, and it has something for everyone. Whether you want to check out wine tours or scuba diving, Limassol has it all.

Check out this post if you need somewhere to stay in Limassol.

8.

Cyprus’s fascinating capital city, Nicosia, also known as Lefkosia, is well worth a visit. The city is divided into two areas: the northern Turkish Cypriots in the north and the southern Greek Cypriots. Nicosia has many restaurants and coffee shops—it’s also home to one of my all-time favorite bakeries, Honest Bread.

You can walk to the Buffer Zone between Nicosia and the occupied northern Lefkosia and take a tour to learn about the “Nicosia Green Line.” If you only have one day, spend the morning on the Republic side exploring the National Museum. Cross over the border for discounted shopping and lunch on the Turkish side. Don’t forget your passport!

Discovering Cyprus: The Ultimate Guide to the Best Places to Visit

Are you wondering where to visit in Cyprus? You can’t miss the island’s beaches—Nissi Beach is a stunning option. This easily accessible beach is one of the most popular in Cyprus. It’s a Blue Flag Beach, making it a top family pick.

Be warned: it gets crazy busy during the summer. The few times we tried to go, we couldn’t even find a free spot on the beach to sit!

Fontana Amorosa is one of the best places in Cyprus to get off the beaten path. This freshwater pool is technically part of the Aphrodite Rock area rather than a standalone beach. It’s only accessible by boat or 4×4, but it’s a fantastic place for swimming and snorkeling.

11

Coral Bay is the perfect place in Cyprus to go snorkeling and swimming. It’s an easy-to-access beach with calm waters and much space to spread out. I recommend visiting Coral Bay for a relaxing afternoon of sunbathing.

12. Church of Saint Lazarus

I suggest visiting this Greek Orthodox Church in Larnaca. Cyprus’s Church of Saint Lazarus was built in the 9th century and is one of the country’s most important Byzantine monuments.

13

The Cyprus Museum is the country’s most culturally significant museum. This museum showcases the country’s unique heritage and history. Visiting the Cyprus Museum is free, making it the best place to go in Cyprus if you’re traveling on a budget.

14

Cyprus is more than just its stunning coastline. In the Troodos Mountain range, you’ll find incredible hiking opportunities. The Caledonia Trail is a fun and scenic option leading to a waterfall. Before returning to the trailhead, enjoy swimming in the pool at the waterfall’s base.

15. Akamas Peninsula National Park

Akamas Peninsula National Park is the best place to visit in Cyprus for untouched nature and remote hiking trails. Akamas Peninsula offers breathtaking views, cycling trails in breathtaking gorges, and excellent spots for birdwatching and wildlife spotting.

Did You Get Travel Insurance Yet?

The Insurance companies I recommend are Hey Mondo and Safety Wing

Hey Mondo is great if you are looking for a great value flexible policy. They offer single-trip cover, annual multi-trip cover, and long-term travel cover. Safety Wing is great value, with monthly coverage starting at $45.08. It’s super easy to use, and it just renews each month. I currently use them as they offer me free cover for my son as part of my policy.
